How placement works

How paid placement works on East Coast Muslim: being listed and claiming are free, masjids never pay, and every paid spot carries a clear label.

Last updated

  • Being listed is free. Claiming your listing is free. Masjids are always free.
  • Paid placement moves a business up in its city, always under a clear label.
  • Payment never adds or strengthens a halal label or a fact, and never changes a review.
  • Placements renew once a year. We email you 38 days before, canceling takes one click, and a cancel within 7 days after a charge is refunded in full.

Free, always

  • Listed: a record on the map with the name, address, category and halal label.
  • Claimed: you control your hours, 3 photos, replies to reviews and 1 active deal, and you get the window kit: a "Find us on East Coast Muslim" window cling and a QR table card.
  • Masjids pay nothing, ever. A masjid that claims its page gets the masjid desk, to keep its iqamah and Jumu'ah times, programs, janazah contact, women's space, parking and access up to date.
  • Registered nonprofits get Featured at half price. So do funeral homes, cemeteries, schools and organizations. It goes by the kind of listing, so adding a food or shopping category keeps the half price.

What you can buy

  • Featured: the top of your category in your city on the food and shopping lists, under a clear Featured label, with up to 25 deals at a time and boosted job posts. On the help lists it stands out with its label where it sits; help stays in order of distance, so it never moves ahead. It is for listings on the food, shopping or help lists of a city.
  • Spotlight: a place on the city page itself, and turns in that metro's Friday edition, which carries up to 3 Spotlights a week. Three per city page.
  • City Sponsor: "The (city) guide, presented by" your business. One per city per year.
  • Coast Partner: placement along the whole coast for relief groups, schools and national brands. Set by conversation; write to [email protected].

Prices depend on the size of the metro. See the rate card.

In the Grand Strand (Myrtle Beach, Conway, North Myrtle Beach and Horry County), placements are sold through Muslim Myrtle Beach, and its Featured shows as Featured here. No one is sold the same thing twice.

What payment changes, and what it never does

Payment changes where you appear:

  • Featured places come first in their category on the food and shopping lists. They take turns, and the order changes every day, so no one is always first.
  • The help lists stay in order of distance. A Featured place there stands out with its label where it sits, and never moves ahead.
  • Spotlights appear on the city page. A City Sponsor's name sits at the top of the city guide, once its wording is approved.
  • A "nearest" list stays in distance order. Payment never moves it.

Payment never adds or strengthens a halal label or a fact. While a placement runs, the stricter paid rules below can hide some.

Payment never changes a review, or the order of reviews.

On a paid listing the halal rules are stricter, not looser. It shows only claims the business stands behind: HCC Verified, Certified, or Owner-stated with the basis on file with us. New York and Maryland add their own rules, set out below. See How we label halal.

Every paid placement is labeled, with the line "Paid placement. It never adds a halal label or changes a review." and a "Why is this featured?" link. In the Friday edition, paid items are labeled Sponsored.

Before you buy

  • From your dashboard, you see the price for each city your business is in, the date it would renew, and how many places are left, such as "2 of 3 Spotlights left in Raleigh".
  • At checkout you agree to the Advertiser Terms, including that your halal claims are true and that you keep their basis on file with us.
  • We check your listing's text against the halal rules before checkout, and tell you plainly what to change.
  • You can pay right away, even if something is still missing. If your text needs a change, or we still need to confirm a nonprofit's EIN, your placement switches on as soon as that is done. Your paid year starts the day you pay and is not extended while it waits.
  • If you paid the nonprofit price and we cannot confirm the EIN within 30 days because it is missing or not on the IRS list, your placement switches on at the regular price instead. We email you the exact amount and the date at least 7 days ahead, then charge the difference once, and it renews at the regular price. If its renewal is off, or fewer than 45 days of the year you paid for are left, it does not switch on this way and nothing more is charged: it keeps waiting until the end of that year. While we are still checking an EIN you gave, nothing changes. If the card declines that difference and every retry fails, nothing is refunded and nothing more is charged: your placement stays up for 6 months from the day you paid, since the nonprofit price is half the regular price. 38 days before those 6 months end, we email you the date and the yearly regular price, then charge it. If that fails too, the placement ends and we email you three ways to bring it back.
  • A listing that is not public on the site yet can buy Featured too. Its placement switches on the day the listing is published. Spotlight and City Sponsor have only a few seats in each city, so they open to a listing once it is public.
  • New York: a paid listing shows a halal claim only with its certifier named.
  • Maryland: until our legal review of Maryland's halal advertising law is done, a paid listing shows no halal claim and no Arabic text while the placement runs. We tell you this before you pay.
  • You pay on Stripe's checkout page. Your card statement reads EAST COAST MUSLIM.

Renewal, with no surprises

  • A placement lasts one year and renews on the same date each year, unless you cancel.
  • If a placement ends because its payment failed, we email you three ways to bring it back: yearly at the regular price, every 6 months, or monthly. The 6-month and monthly plans are offered only as a way back, from the link in that email. A 6-month plan gets the same email 38 days before each renewal; a monthly plan renews each month with Stripe's receipt, and you can cancel it any time.
  • We email you 38 days before each renewal: that it renews automatically, which placement, the exact price, the charge date, and a one-click "Cancel renewal" button.
  • About a week before the charge, a short reminder follows.
  • Cancel before the charge date and you are not charged. Cancel within 7 days after a charge and we refund it in full.
  • If we change our prices, you keep your price at renewal unless we tell you 38 days before.
  • If a funeral home, cemetery, school or organization paying half price for Featured is filed as a business instead, it renews at the regular price, and the notice 38 days before says so.
  • A placement that has not switched on by the end of the year you paid for does not renew. We turn its renewal off before the notice would go out, and tell you.

Canceling

  • Cancel in one click from your placements in your dashboard, or from the notice email. You never need to call or write to us.
  • Cancel within 7 days after any charge, whether you bought a placement, it renewed, or we charged the difference to the regular price, and we refund that charge in full, even if its renewal is already off. The placement then comes down.
  • After those 7 days, canceling stops the next renewal. Your placement stays until the end of the time you paid for, and you can resume it until then.
  • A placement that has not switched on yet follows the same rules. After the 7 days, canceling stops the renewal, and the placement keeps the rest of the year you paid for.
  • You can also update your card and see your invoices in Stripe's billing portal, linked from your dashboard.

If a payment fails

Your placement stays up for 7 days while the card is retried, and we email you a link to update it. After that it comes down. A later successful payment brings it back. If every retry fails, the placement ends, and we email you three ways to bring it back.
